Humanity's Fallen State and the Path to True Freedom

Written by Contributing Author, Charles Wekesa

The Bible is full of amazing promises. It talks about living an abundant life, finding true freedom, and experiencing deep rest. Sounds pretty great, right? But here’s the thing: many of us who believe in these promises still find ourselves dealing with tough times, feeling like we don’t have enough, or struggling to break free from things that hold us back.

The Truth That Sets Us Free: Understanding Bondage and Liberation Through Christ

(Contemplations from Chapter two of Kevin’s book “Freed to be Servant and Slave. Available on AMAZON)

Feeling stuck in a rut, unable to break free from the things that hold you back, is a common experience. Well, you’re not alone. The search for freedom is a universal human experience, and it’s something we all grapple with at some point in our lives. Today, we’re going to talk about a powerful source of freedom that’s been around for centuries: truth.

Now, when we talk about truth, we’re not just talking about facts and figures. We’re talking about the kind of truth that can change your life. And you know what? The Bible has a lot to say about this kind of truth. It’s not just an old book full of stories; it’s a treasure trove of wisdom that offers real solutions to our everyday struggles.

Biblical Promises vs. Daily Realities

So what gives? Why is there such a big gap between what the Bible promises and what we often experience in our daily lives? It’s a tough question, but it’s one we need to ask if we want to understand how to truly live in freedom.

The Nature of Bondage

Bondage isn’t just about physical chains. It can take many forms, and sometimes it’s not even visible to others. There’s mental bondage, where our thoughts keep us trapped in negative patterns. There’s emotional bondage, where past hurts or fears hold us back from living fully. And there’s spiritual bondage, where we feel disconnected from God and our true purpose.

The world we live in often makes these forms of bondage worse. Our culture, with its focus on success, appearance, and material wealth, can keep us trapped in a cycle of never feeling good enough. It’s like we’re all part of this big system that keeps us from experiencing true freedom.

Jesus as the Disruptive Force

This is where Jesus comes in. He said something pretty bold: “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He wasn’t just talking about being a good teacher or a wise man. He was saying that He is truth itself, and that this truth has the power to disrupt all the lies that keep us bound.

Think about it like this: when you turn on a light in a dark room, the darkness doesn’t stand a chance. It has to go. That’s what Jesus’ truth does to the lies that keep us trapped. It exposes them for what they are and shows us a better way to live.

The Reality of Tribulation

Now, I wish I could tell you that once you know this truth, everything in your life will be perfect. But Jesus was honest about this too. He said, “In this world you will have trouble.” That’s just the reality of living in an imperfect world.

People all over the globe face different kinds of tribulation. For some, it’s poverty or physical hardship. For others, it’s discrimination or injustice. And for many of us, it’s internal struggles like anxiety, depression, or addiction. All of these things can feel like bondage, holding us back from the life we want to live.

False Narratives and Cultural Bondage

One of the trickiest forms of bondage comes from the stories our culture tells us about what’s important, what success looks like, or how we should live. These narratives can be really sneaky because they often sound good on the surface.

For example, our culture might tell us that we need to be constantly productive to be valuable, or that our worth is tied to our appearance or achievements. These false stories can keep us trapped in a cycle of never feeling good enough or always striving for more.

Path to True Freedom

So how do we break free from all this? It starts with getting to know Jesus personally. This isn’t about religion or following a bunch of rules. It’s about developing a relationship with the one who called Himself the truth.

As we get to know Jesus, we start to see through the false narratives of our culture. We begin to understand our true value and purpose. And bit by bit, we learn to live in the freedom that comes from knowing the truth.

Conclusion

Friend, the journey to freedom isn’t always easy, but it’s worth it. Jesus’ truth has the power to break every chain and set us free from all forms of bondage and oppression. So why not take a step towards that freedom today? Open your heart to the truth that Jesus offers. It might just change your life in ways you never imagined.
